Choose the right kind of text
Subtitles can translate dialogue or display the spoken language. Closed captions and SDH tracks can also identify speakers and describe important sounds. Check the track list in the player you are using. The original-language label in our catalog does not describe all available subtitle languages.
Make the text comfortable
Where the player allows it, adjust size and contrast before the film begins. An outline or background can help over bright scenes. Test from your actual viewing distance, especially on a television. Very large text can obscure the frame even though it looks convenient on the settings screen.
Fix timing carefully
First check that the subtitle belongs to the same edition. If a supported delay control is available, change it in small steps and compare an obvious spoken line. A mismatch that keeps growing can indicate a different cut or timing basis, not just a fixed delay.
For a mixed-language group, agree on the spoken track and subtitle language before starting. This avoids interrupting the first scene while everyone tries to explain a different preference. Our dubbed-movie guide covers the audio side of that choice.
